Horrors At Midnight Part 6

When they got to the bus stop at about 5pm. Jason and Stacey stepped down from the bus.

Just across the road, in her friend’s car, sat Linda watching to see when he returned. She wanted to play the detective, spying to catch him with the so called colleague as advised by Jumuoke, whose boutique was down the same street. She had spent most of her day with her friend in her boutique updating her on all that had transpired recently in her relationship with Jason. Now as they both came down, she watched them closely to see and confirm her suspicion.

“So how was your day?” Jason asked Stacey as they walked together heading down the street.

“Fine, fine. And yours?” she asked.

“All tensed until the Project Manager left. I’m sure anyone could tell that, seeing how Jide put me on my toes,” he replied and laughed.

Stacey laughed too. Indeed it was as if Jide had something on Jason earlier in the morning. And although many people didn’t understand why, she and the few who had to stay back to work yesterday knew why. “That should teach you not to sleep on the job another time.” She said after a short while.

“Hmmn… I’m certain I’ve learnt more than a lesson. So can I have your number for neighbours and colleagues sakes?”

“Ok. Sure.” Then she called it out for him and he typed it into his phone.

If she was fair in complexion like her boy friend, her face would have been visibly red seeing Jason exchanging numbers with the colleague. Her friend had warned her to keep her cool and only act the spy regardless of what she saw and she was finding a hard time doing that right now. She cursed the both of them with swear words and threatened hellfire on the lady she was seeing.

Jason returned the phone to his pocket. “Thank you. I should give you a call over the weekend. Have a lovely one.”

“You’re welcome. Have a lovely weekend too,” Stacey replied and left him in front of his gate while he knocked to get in.

As soon as he entered through the gate, Linda put on the ignition and followed Stacey right down to the gate of her house. She took a mental note of the house and of the lady and then she drove off to her friend’s boutique.

* * *

“Can you imagine the cockroach Jason is flirting with: one ugly mucheche like that, with no scent of class? I can’t believe him,” Linda started as soon as Jumuoke dismissed one of her girls from her little office at the back of the sales area.

“Na wa for am o’. Just three days for the company and e don find woman. Men are just etched with the spirit to wander and to be unfaithful,” Jumuoke said, clicking her tongue.

Linda stood up and paced up and down the small office space. “Look,” she said. “hmmn. If I deal with Jason, he will never cross the part of a Benin girl again. I’ll show him that I’m not the kind of lady he messes with. I’m the daughter of my mother.”

“Babe calm down. He might just be having one of those flirty seasons or who knows, you might me misinterpreting things. It just started, right?

Linda came to the table and spoke, tapping the table with her index finger, “This thing started way before now. Perhaps that’s why he chose to go work at that Blue Energy company.” Then she sat down and continued, “Some weeks ago, I observed he started avoiding me, forming busy with research according to him. I observed he wasn’t hanging out with our click of friends as before and what’s worse, he wouldn’t make advances at me. That’s not the Jason I know.”

“Are you serious?”

“Am I joking, Jummy? I’m telling you this guy has been seeing someone and it’s not a fling. He’s really going to get it hot from me, really hot.”

Jumuoke stood up and sat on the table facing her friend. “We’ll work out something okay? Let this period slide by and let’s get back some calm.”

* * *

Jason smiled inside as he stepped into the house, imagining what Linda would think of him seeing him exchanging numbers with the said colleague he was supposed to be cheating on her with. He was walking straight to the BQ when he heard his name.

“Jason,”

He turned to see his brother standing at the entrance to the main house with both hands in his shorts. He wanted to greet him but pride wouldn’t let him do so first.

“Good evening. Welcome,” Bernard greeted raising a hand and it went back into his pocket.

“Evening Ben,” Jason replied and turned back towards the BQ. That was unlike his elder brother to greet him first. He wondered what his mother must have told him to make him act out of place.

Few minutes later, he came into the main house to have dinner. After eating, he went into the smaller sitting room to watch a match between Manchester and Chelsea and his brother was right there in the room. They match had just started. Jason knew there would be more misunderstanding because he was a Chelsea fan and Bernard was with the Red Devils. But he wasn’t ready to back away. He sat down on a seat just opposite his brother and no communication; they just sat there watching, each with his own bottle and glass of wine.

*******************************

Ten minutes into the game, Manchester scored with a heart-trick and Bernard jumped up, raising his bottle in the air in excitement, screaming, “Goooooal! Goal! Goal! Goal!” He went closer to the 48-inch Television screen to see the replay - it was really astounding. And that was such a wrong time for what happened next to happen.
GBRRRRRRRR BOOM! It came from the transformer supplying the neighborhood light and the blackout that followed was within seconds.
“Aarrrrrgh! Why now?” said Bernard, hissing in frustration. He stormed out of that living room most likely to put on the generator.
Jason was cracking inside with laughter and as he watched his brother leave, he poured wine into his glass and raised it into the air, “To the universe,” he said standing up, “for perfect timing.”

“Hey, put on the generator immediately.” Bernard ordered the security man and turned to go inside.
“Oga, no fuel dey for inside the generator, because Oga Jason never buy come yet,” the security said as Bernard turned to leave.
He paused for a moment, thinking. Why is Jason fond of abdicating his responsibilities? Isn’t it his job to make sure fuel is always available? And mama wants them to reconcile? He looked at his wristwatch - there was still time before the filling stations close for the day. So he walked towards the car, feeling his pocket for the car keys. “Put the fuel jerry can in the car and open the gate for me.”
The security man did as he was told.
***********************************************
Linda had made up her mind after leaving her friend’s place that she would confront her boyfriend about his latest attitude towards her, and so she headed for Jason’s place. On her way to his house, as she got close to Stacey’s place, she saw her coming out of the gate, with another man. She slowed down. “Can you imagine the whore? She even has another man,” Linda spoke out loud and she was the only person in her car. “And she’s so plain ugly, I wonder what Jason sees in her. Nonsense.”
There was a pool of water by the road just close to where Stacey was standing with the man and a wicked smile spread across Linda’s face – she would give a taste of her poison.
In a split second, Stacey and the man standing next to her were baptized with dirty water. Some passers-by threw abuses at the driver of the car at it sped away and started sympathizing with the two of them.
“What the hell! Was she blind?” Stacey looked over her dress, all drenched in muddy water. “Some people are just wicked and plain stupid. See all this road and this woman just chose to speed past and splash water on us? I don’t understand. Emeka sorry o’”
“May God punish that woman and her entire generation and may that car meet accident on the way,” Emeka screamed in anger. “Just look at me, eh.”
Stacey stared at him in disbelief. “God forbid! Emeka don’t pay evil or evil. That’s not a right way to pray.”
“What do you mean? That woman is wicked and she deserves to be cursed.”
“No no no. I don’t feel comfortable with that statement. And you are a worker in church, Emeka. You should know by now that God doesn’t answer such prayers. Please let’s get back inside and clean up.”
“You go. I’ll take a taxi home.” Emeka was wearing a black T-shirt inside his shirt so he took off the shirt while replying her.
“Ok. I’m so sorry. I really wanted to go with you but now-“
“No don’t worry. Greet Lois for me when she returns,” Emeka replied and flagged down a taxi.
Stacey waved at him and went back into the gate. She couldn’t wait to enter the bathroom.
***********************************************
The security man had barely sat down when he heard the blaring of an unfamiliar car horn in front of the gate. He opened the smaller section of the gate to see who it was - it was Oga Jason’s girlfriend so he opened without asking questions.
Jason was still waiting, expecting to hear the generator come on when someone came into the house. Linda came into the living room signaling her presence with her shoes.
When Jason saw her, the smile on his face evaporated. “Linn, hi, why didn’t you call me before coming?” he asked, standing up.
Linda put a wicked smile on hers and majestically took her seat before responding. “And since when did I have to always call you before I come visit you, Jason?”
“Oh please. It’s civilized to give a call before visiting peradventure I’m not in or I’m busy,” he replied, still standing.
“Save that lecture for your housemaid. I’m here, you’re in, and you’re not busy as I can very well see. Jason what is going on?” This time she had dropped her hand bag and had a pleading look on her face.
“What is going on? Are you asking me that or I should be asking you?”
“You’ve been acting strange these past few days and you barely ask after me or call me.”
Jason moved away from the chair, pacing slowly around the round with his gaze fixed on her and his glass in his hand.
“What? I was really at your house last night – you weren’t hallucinating. So what’s with the barely ask after me or call me humbug?” He spoke with such calm, he was amazed at himself.
Linda was getting worked up and losing her patience but she still maintained her calm and responded. “Stop feigning ignorance. When last did we go out, Jason? When? When last did you take me to the movies or spend time with me like you used to? And you call my complaints humbug? As she spoke, her pitch was rising.
Jason shook his head, walking away towards the wine bar. If only she’ll get more upset and get away. “Nagging. You’re now nagging like an old woman. And I’m not cut out for listening. I dislike it.”
Linda stood up following him. She had reached her elastic limit. “So now I’m an old woman because there’s another woman right? I’m nagging. I’m a humbug,” she shouted. “You look me in the face and spill all these rubbish at me, you, Jason?”
Jason kept the glass cup on the counter and turned to her talking as calmly as ever, “Look. You know this is my family house, so stop shouting like a mad woman. There are other people living here and you don’t want to abase yourself in their presence.”
He had just pushed the gear to the highest level. Linda walked up to him and gave him a hot one on his cheek.
“I’ll not have you insult me like I’m some cheap slot. If this is your way of telling me it’s over between us, be sure you’ll still hear from me, fool,” she said and stormed out of the house.
Jason watched her leave through the door and then he went to the window to watch as she entered her car and left the premises. When she was completely out of sight, he came out to see the security man closing the gate.
“Hey, come here.”
The man bolted the gate and came to him. “Yes sir.”
Jason put a hand on his shoulder as he spoke, “If that lady comes here looking for me, you must make sure I’m aware before you let her in. Is that clear?”
“Yes sir.”
“And don’t let her drive in. She can park outside.”
“Yes sir.”
“Where is Bernard?” Jason asked.
“Oga Bernard just car fuel jerry can comot now as fuel no dey house,” the man replied him.
“Is that so?” Jason said rhetorically as it downed on him what blunder he had committed. He went to his own apartment to get the key to his power bike and came out again.
“Open the gate.”
********************************************
Stacey had finished cleaning up and was back in the living room pondering on what just happened outside. That lady in the car that splashed that water must have been a devil’s agent. Seriously she could understand why Emeka rained that entire curse on her, although she really felt uncomfortable with it. Yes, that was common and he didn’t act any different from how her pastor would and this is what gave her course for concern. She’d been bothering to listen to other messages from other ministers of God and she couldn’t help acknowledging that there was a huge difference in their interpretation of the word of God compared to today’s ministers around her especially in her church. There was hope, a living hope in their gospel. There was freedom and peace of mind when they talked about the grace of God and the difference Jesus Christ made by his existence and death.
She wished she could understand fully but who could she meet to explain these things some more to her? No one around her seemed to consider it. Everyone was just wrapped up in the demon-centered gospel of the day, chasing away demons and enemies and rarely seeing the life on Christ, much less talking about it or even living in it. And she wanted to know more and experience it. She was still lost in thoughts when a beep came from her phone. She looked. It was a text message from her friend, Bari. She read the text and quickly called her back excited. “Bari! Are you really getting married?... Congratulations dear. I am so happy for you… Next month eh? That’s ok. I’ll be there definitely… My regards to CJ please… God bless you.”
So Bari was getting married in a month’s time? What a life. And here she was with no man and her mother was there to constantly remind, her as if her loneliness wasn’t enough reminder. She left the sitting room to seek solace within the confines of her own room.

Horrors At Midnight Part 5

"Yes, I did. The guy saved my dumb ass tonight," said Jason turning to look at his friend. "You heard the lady, right?

Carlos scuffed and said, "Oh please, stop acting like a kid. I'm grateful Bernard is alive, but Jesus? Don't mingle with all that religious sh*t mehn."

Jason crossed his arms over his chest and gave Carl a good look. "You're grateful? To who or what? To the skies? To God? Tell me Carl."

"I'm grateful to God, but that's as far as it goes. So just thank God," and Carlos stressed the last word, "and watch it."

"Watch it, huh? I get."

They wheeled the stretcher away and Jason joined other people who had been waiting, into the ward. Bernard was seated on a chair with a plaster on his forehead and another around his left wrist. He stood up as soon as he saw them but he wasn't smiling.

"Ben. What's up man? How are you doing?" Carlos greeted him first, giving him a hug.

"I'm alive," Bernard answered, his face stiffened in anger and his eyes still fixed on Jason. "I can never count on you for anything, Jason, never."

Jason put a hand in his trouser pocket while the other one ran through his hair. His brother had a right to be mad at him tonight and for good reason. The two weren't getting along as before and it seemed the gap was widening between them. But he wished at that moment that they could put their differences aside and be brothers, especially after the night's encounter.

"You are right, Ben," Jason looked up at his brother to meet his gaze, "Be glad I wasn't the one driving tonight."

"Damn you!" Bernard said, stepping forward but Carlos held him back.

"Easy Ben. This is the hospital. Are you good to go?" Carlos said to Ben.

"Yes. Please take me home," Ben replied Carlos and they left the ward together.

Jason was behind them. How he felt inside was well different from his external reaction but he couldn't help it. He walked to his car and waited until Carlos had driven out, before leaving the hospital and it was 11:10pm.

As soon as Bernard entered the house, his mother, who was still awake sitting in the living room, quickly went to embrace her son.

"Bernard, what happened to you?" she touched the plaster on his forehead and he winced from the pain.

"Mum, I'm sorry I wasn't picking your calls. I had to handle some things that couldn't wait until tomorrow," Bernard said to her.

"You haven't answered my question, son."

"Just an accident I had today. I'll tell you about it tomorrow mummy. I need to rest now." Bernard kissed his mother goodnight and walked away just as Jason stepped into the house.

"Jason, what happened to you two? You kept me worried sick about your whereabouts and no one was picking my calls. Why?"

Jason was short of words. He just apologized and left for the Boys Quarters where he stayed.

****** ****** ******

He was walking in the street alongside other pedestrians. Suddenly he saw himself alone floating up into the air. He tried to keep his feet on the ground and gain his balance but the more he tried, the more he was lifted off the ground. He lost strenght trying to resist and started soaring higher and higher into the sky, stretched out like a dead man.

And then the skies darkened like a heavy stormy rain was about to break forth. Then somewhere in the sky, just above him, the cloud parted, exposing a brilliantly coloured blue sky cascaded with shiny stars. It looked like heaven. He could feel himself being sucked into the opening.

Just when he was about to be sucked through the hole, gravity found its way into the scene and he saw himself falling from that very tall height back to earth, until he thunderously crashed into the ground and woke up.

Again he was awake, but not awake - just like it happened the previous night. He tried to move his body, but he couldn't. This time he didn't hesitate to call the name of Jesus and as he was doing so inside, even though it wasn't escaping his lips, he's left eye opened just wide enough for him to see a very white small cat sitting unperturbed on his pillow, looking directly at him. He was shocked. The cat watched him for a moment, and then stood up on it's own and walked away. And Jason watched within the periphery of his vision as it left.

Immediately it left, he gained control of his motorskills and he stood up looking around for the cat but it had disappeared into thin air. His looked at the clock hanging on the wall: the time was 4:45 am.

********** ******** **********

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities... powers... rulers of the darkness of this world... spiritual wickedness in high places...

********** *********** *******

He yawned and fell backwards on the bed, holding his head. A cat? What was the meaning of all these, he thought. And what do I do. This is the second time in two nights. The third time and it might succeed in killing me. Fear gripped him as that thought flashed his mind.

Feeling too guilty to pray even though the thought crossed his mind, Jason stood up and went about preparing for work.

* * *

“Did you pray this morning?” she asked him.

“Bubu, not yet but I will. I have to visit the hospital now. I want to check on the driver,” Bernard replied over the phone.

“Ok. I almost took a flight to come see you this morning. Can’t wait to have you back on Sunday.”

Bernard stood up from the chair clutching the phone with one hand and hugging his mum with the other. “I miss you too, love. Mummy’s here. She sends her regards.”

“Send her kisses for me. Ok. Bye,” Bunmi said at the other end.

“Bye love.” Bernard hung up. “Mummy how was your night?”

“It was fine. You had an accident yesterday, Bernard. Why didn’t you tell me?” his mum asked.

Ben was surprised. “Mum how did you know?”

“Your brother told me about it this morning before leaving for work,” she answered and beckoned to him. “Sit down.”

Bernard sat down next to his mother anticipating the lecture of peace that she usually gives whenever he had a scuffle with his younger brother.

“I think you should settle your differences once and for all with your brother. You are the older one. I’ve always told you that it’s easier to relate with people when you know their character and understand their personality,”

“I know mummy. I understand that but there are just those things that need to be addressed in the attitude of a person and it has nothing to do with their personality,”

“And all the bickering can’t change a person set in his ways, except God does. We should continue to pray for him. Will you?”

Bernard chuckled. He hadn’t finished praying for his own self, not to talk of praying for another person. “Mummy I’ve heard you okay. I will work on it. I’ll be going back to the hospital this morning,”

“That’s okay. I’m so grateful to God for preserving your life,” she said, lifting her eyes up to the ceiling, “Abasi sosongo.”

Bernard left the house driving his mother’s car. And on his way out, he met Linn in her car.

“Heeey, Linda. How are you?” he greeted leaning out of the window of the car.

Linda wound down the window glass of her car, “Hi Ben. When did you come into town?”

“Last night. You look good.”

“Thanks. What’s with the bruises? What happened to you?” she asked, noticing the plaster and all.

Bernard smiled and replied, “Nothing much. Just a little accident.” While he was still speaking, his phone rang and he took excuse and picked it. “Carlos good morning… Thanks for picking me up last night… I’m better…”

Linda waved at Bernard signaling her departure from their conversation and he waved back while driving towards the opposite direction, still talking on the phone with Carlos.

* * *

“So why did you sneak out in the middle of the night without telling me?” It was Linda asking Jason over the phone, while he was at work. He didn’t want to pick her calls at first.

Jason sounded uninterested as he spoke, “Linn, I had to go pick Bernard,”

“And I'm supposed to believe that lie?”

“Why all these nagging? What’s wrong with you?” he snapped.

“No, I should redirect that question at you, Mr. Jason Duke,” Linn snapped back.

Jason paused for a few seconds then spoke, “Is this some reaction to your monthly flow or something? Thought we were cool yesterday?”

“So there’s another lady, eh? That why you’ve been acting so funny these few days,”

Now Jason was surprised at the accusation. “Sorry? What nonsense are you talking about?”

“Let me recollect your very words ‘If she rides with me, she rides with me’. Who the hell did you give a ride to, two days ago?”

Jason was speechless. How did she find out he gave Stacey a ride? He wanted to deny it but that wasn’t his style. “I gave a friend, a colleague a ride on my bike. So what?”

“So everything, Jason, SO EVERYTHING! You think you can just disrespect me with another lady? Trust me; you don’t want to see the other side of me.” She hung up.

He looked at the phone – she had hung up. If only she knew how he was looking for a way to detach himself from her right now, she wouldn’t pick an unnecessary quarrel.

The Project Manager had come and gone and all went well. There was nothing much to do on site so most of the workers went to the office and the cafeteria to relax. Jason joined them.

* * *

At the close of work, Chika met Stacey. “Will you like to hang out tomorrow evening? We’re having a small party at Ejiro’s place. I want you to also meet someone.”

“Oh Chika, I don’t want to turn you down, but em…-”

“C’mon,” said Chika, “it is just this weekend. And you know all work and no play will make you so dull. Don’t turn it down. It won’t hurt to have some fun.”

Stacey accepted the invitation after giving it a second thought. It really wouldn’t hurt and wouldn’t that be better than staying home all day, having to put up with mum.

“Alright, I’ll see you at 5 in the evening,” said Chika, and she left Stacey to her packing.

I hope I don’t regret this, Stacey thought. She had known Chika long enough to conclude that her choices of men were unscrupulous: married men, double dating men, all sorts of men as long as they had cash rolling were just okay for her. In fact she rarely hung out with the right kind. It would be a surprise if this first time she attempts to introduce someone to her; it turns out to be an okay guy. Until tomorrow.

Horrors At Midnight Part 4

Mrs Duke, Jason's mum, got a call from her older Son, Bernard, saying he was coming into Port Harcourt from Abuja and needed someone to pick him when he gets to the airport. So she dialed Jason's number.

**** **** **** ***

Linda opened the door and they both went into her house. She had intentions of getting him to finish what tney started the previous night. So she went into the room to put on some lingerie while Jason was helping himself with wine at the table.

Then his phone rang and he picked the call. "Hello Mum... I'm fine and you?... Ok... He did?... I'm not sure I can do that mum, I'm on a visit... Send somebody, send Badmus the driver or he can get a cab... Ok," he said with a sigh, "I'll do you the favour. I'll be on my way to the airport."

He took what was left in the cup and walked into the room to tell Linda he was about to leave, but she came out and met him at the door, dressed seductively.

"Jason, I'm not interested in your apologies, I just want us to finish up what we started last night," she said, walking up to him dressed in the most provocating outfit.

Jason gulped. He opened his mouth to speak but couldn't. Instead he heard a voice in his head say, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man... a way to escape, a way to escape, a way to escape..." he closed his eyes and opened it again only to see Linda right in his face.

She placed her hand on his chest and kissed him pulling him to towards herself. He didn't resist.

"Stacey, you haven't told me why you came home late today and didn't go to church," Stacey's mother asked her as they both sat in the living room.

"Mummy, ah see the time now. It's 7:30pm already. I got back from work about an hour ago because we had to finish a part of the work before tomorrow," replied Stacey.

"You were supposed to see Pastor Nick for prayers like we agreed. So I expected you earlier," her mum said.

Stacey sighed and said, "Mummy I know. I just couldn't help it." She wished she didn't have to see Pastor Nick again for any more prayers. It looked like the more she sort for prayers, the more the men pulled away, and the more desperate she became and had to seek more prayers. It was now a vain viscious loop that benefited only Pastor Nick. Because although her mum hadn't told her, she knew she was appreciating the Man of God for the fasting and prayers he was undertaking on her behalf.

Her mum continued, "That means you have to see him over the weekend, my dear. You really need a man in your life-"

"Mum! I'm only twenty-five please. Don't make me feel like I have a demon or something," stacey snapped.

"I'm only looking for your good. Look at Beauty, your cousin; she has done her introduction, and what about your friends - all married. I was only twenty when I married your father," Mrs Okoro addressed her daughter.

"Not again mummy. I'm not ready for this kind of conversation. Thanks for your concern though," Stacey answered and stood up to go into her room.

Mrs Okoro hissed and shook her head, saying, "You children of nowadays are just plain stubborn and blind even to your own problems."

Stacey left her and went into her room. Once inside, she knelt down to pray. She really wasn't happy she wasn't in a relationship, but more than that, she hated having to face pressure from her mother. She prayed and prayed in tongues until she fell asleep.

****** ******** *******

Jason woke up and saw Linn sleeping next to him on the bed. It took a fews seconds for him to remember where he was and how he got there. He sneaked out of the bed and picked his clothings, then he collected his phone and keys from the side table before leaving the room.

It was on his way to the palour, he remembered the last conversation he had with his mother and the promise he made to pick his brother at the airport. He checked his phone, the time was 9:45pm and there were twenty-nine missed calls and five messages.

"Sh*t!" he cursed and quickly unlocked the phone. His mother and brother and his friend, Carlos, were the callers. He read the text messages.

"Oh my God... No... Noo" Jason quickly dressed up and hurriedly left the house. He went to his car, and entered. He didn't know whether to call his mother or get to the house first. All the same he started the engine and drove the car out of the area. His heart was beating dangerously.

************************

Mrs Duke kept trying both of her sons lines but none was picking, she got perplexed. It was over three hours now and Jason hadn't replied her texts either. She paced up and down in the living room, praying. These were the only children she had and she felt something wasn't right, but she didn't know what to do. She decided to call Linda. The phone rang and rang and rang, no reply.

"What is going on with everybody tonight?" she asked, looking at her phone. She tried Bernard's fiancee's number.

"Hello Mummy!" the caller at the other end answered with excitement.

"Bunmi my dear, how are you doing?"

"I'm fine ma. I'm sure you've seen Bernard, how well I've been taking care of him?" Bunmi asked.

"That's exactly why I called at this time my dear. Bernard has not been picking my calls. He hasn't even gotten home. And neither has Jason, who I sent to pick him up from the airport."

"But I spoke with him an hour ago and he said he'd just arrived Port Harcourt and was expecting Jason," Bunmi replied, "Mummy maybe they went to have a few drinks or something. He's fine. Don't worry."

"Now you've told me you spoke with him an hour ago, I'm less worried. I'll wait. But if you can reach him still, let him know I'm waiting for him," Mrs Duke said.

"Ok mum. I'll send him a ping. I'll call you back afterwards," Bunmi said and ended the call at the other end.

Mrs Duke raised her hands to the heavens and prayed in her dialect, "Abasi mbok nim ndito iden mmi. Kpeme mmo. Ku yak idiok anam mmo. Sosongo." and she went back to take her seat.

Jason called Carlos as soon as he was out on the highway.

Carlos picked the call at the other end. "Man, where have you been?"

Jason ignored the question and asked, "Carlos where's my brother?"

"He's been taken to UPTH. I'm almost there now."

Jason pounded the steering wheel in frustration and ended the call. His head was reeling. Linda! Linda! He screamed inside. If she hadn't tempted him sour and he had gone to pick his brother himself, this accident wouldn't have occured. What would he tell his mother, he thought. "God, Please don't let my brother die. Please. I can't live with the blame. I know I should have listened."

Instantly, like a thought, he heard a voice say, "The enemy is in a battle for your soul, because you know the truth. You are at the verge of being set free. I have come that you may have eternal life. Believe."

"I surrender. I believe. Please, just let Bernard live," Jason replied in his heart. He didn't know what else to say. He was getting close to the hospital now. Then his phone began to ring again and when he looked at the screen, he saw the caller was Linda. He felt a sudden rush of disgust and anger and hate. He immediately cut the call and flung the phone on the passenger seat. The phone rang again and again and again.

"Please where is the man they brought in that had an accident?" Carlos asked the first nurse he saw as soon as he entered the emergency ward of the hospital.

"Ask the nurse at that counter," the lady responded, pointing to the counter in front of him. He went to the counter but the nurse wasn't there.

"Why some drivers wicked like dis? For night like this, them go drink finish, still enter steering to drive," one woman sitting at the waiting area was saying to another. "Now see as dis one just kill other people join. God forbid."

His heart skipped as he heard what the woman said. He immediately called Jason to know where he was but Jason wasn't picking.

Jason wasn't picking because he thought it was still Linda calling. As he drove into the parking lot, he found himself praying again.

A few minutes later, he was hastily walking into the emergency section of the hospital.

"Jason!" Carlos called him when he saw him come in.

"Have you seen Bernard?" Jason asked.

"Are you a relative to Mr Bernard Duke?" an elderly nurse, who just came out of the ward asked, looking at Jason. He looked a lot like his brother.

"Yes, Yes I am. How is he? Where is he?" Jason asked. His face paled with fear.

The nurse looked at him. She could see the fear written all over him. "Your brother is fine. It was certainly a miracle for him."

Just then a metal stretcher, the one used to transfer corpse to the morgue, was pulled into the waiting area by one of the hospital workers.

"The driver and all the occupants of one of the cars involved in the accident, all died. You brother only sustained some minor injuries, but the driver of the taxi he entered lost an arm."

Carlos and Jason both heaved a sigh of relief.

"So where is he?" Jason asked the woman with excitement.

"You won't be allowed into the ward now because some corpse are about to be transfered, but as soon as they're done you'll be allowed into the ward to see your brother," the woman replied and left them to continue with her duties.

Jason embraced Carlos and they waited to be allowed into the ward. While they were waiting, it felt weird but he said 'Thank you Jesus' aloud and that caught his friend's attention.

"Did I just hear you say that?"

Horrors At Midnight Part 3

Jide took out his walkie talkie from his pocket and radioed Jason to meet him at the office. He wore a frown on his face. It was almost lunch time but he wasn't going to give anyone in the team such luxury. Jason came in ten minutes later.

"Sit down," Jide said to him and took a seat himself.

Jason pulled out a chair and sat upright. He knew what this discussion was about and didn't feel too comfortable.

"The entire team will stay back today to correct the alignment, because the PM will be here tomorrow morning to inspect our progress," Jide kept his gaze on him as he spoke. "But I'll like to know why you let the turbine swing out of position. Were you sleeping on the guage?"

Jason's eyes dropped at the question. He knew he'd gotten himself into trouble. It was a costly mistake that he wished he could handle alone, but ofcourse, that was far from possible. He needed the team's help. He searched for words to say to his Boss, to express his remorse.

"I take responsibility for that swing. I, I apologize for the extra work it's going to cause. Where do we start with rectifing it?" Jason spoke looking at Jide.

"I will not tolerate such clumsiness next time. You, Tega, and Shola should see to the alignment at lunchtime," the Superintendent replied and stood up.

********** ********* **********

The work to be done wasn't finished until it was closing time. So when other workers were getting ready to join the bus at the close of work, some members of the Mechanical Department had to stay behind to complete the work: Jide, Jason, Tega, Shola, Idris, and Stacey - the later two being a part of the flushing team.

"I heard you guys are working overtime. That's good," Chika said. She was walking with Stacey.

"Overtime ke? We're staying back to correct some mistakes," Stacey replied. "PM is coming to inspect the work tomorrow morning."

"Ok. So you'll all find your way home after work?"
"I dunno if there's a better arrangement," Stacey replied tactifully dodging the conclusion she assumed Chika was heading for. "Alright. See you tomorrow." And she left Chika to join the others at the construction site.

After about an hour of teamwork, they got the system aligned and concluded the work for the day. Everyone then dispatched. Stacey was waiting for a cab just out the company gate, by thd road, when Jason came out with his bike and saw her.

He removed his helmet and asked, "Going home?"

"Yes," she replied. Her heart raced at the possibility of riding home on the bike.

"Do you mind?" he asked, tilting the bike as if suggesting she should climb on it.

She smiled and worked towards him. This would be the best day of her life, she thought.

Climbing up the bike wasn't difficult, as she leaned on his shoulder to do so, but then, the seat was so tilted forward, she was more or less on his back. And to her, it was cool but very uncomfortable.

"Is this your first time on a bike?" Jason asked her as she tried to find a comfortable position on the bike.

"Yes it is - my first time."

He handed over the helmet to her. "Here, put it on. You'll have to put your hand around my waist to get your balance."

What? Do I have to? She wished she hadn't taken the offer in the first place. This was way into her personal space. She knew it would also look ridiculous if she changed her mind and came down. There were a few people at the gate, watching. She just put on the helmet and held his shoulders.

"I'm waiting ma'am," he said.

Stacey reluctantly slipped her hands around his waist. She couldn't deny the fact that she felt more comfortable in that position. She just disliked having to be that close to a stranger, and it did matter that he was also a colleague.

"Enjoy the ride," he said and started the bike. He was going to give her an experience to remember, he thought. A smile spread across his lips as he zoomed off.

The journey that should have taken ten minutes took twenty, with Jason zooming here and there, following the longest cut possible. Stacey had her heart beat doubled in excitement all through the journey, enjoying every bit of it. So by the time they came close to the street where they both lived, she wished she was living farther away.

He stopped in front of her house and helped her come down.

"Hope you enjoyed it?"

She removed the helmet and responded, "Oh my! I did. It was fun. Thank you very much." She looked like someone that had really had a good time.

"You're welcome," he said, taking the helmet from her and wearing it. "Perhaps we could do it again, tomorrow?"

"Too much excitement in such a short time? I'll pass," she said.

"See you tomorrow morning at the bus stop then," Jason said giving her a wink. Then he drove away.

* * *

Jumoke, a friend of Linda's, picked up her phone and dialled her number.
"Hello Linda,"

"Jummy, Hi,"

"You and Jason just flew by without you stopping to check on your girl?"

"Flew by where?" Linn asked surprised.

"Ah ah. I just saw you both zoom past my boutique now," Jummy answered.

"I haven't seen Jason today. I'll call you back later," Linn said and dropped the call. She tried to calm her emotions. So Jason had the effontry to give another girl a ride? And he hadn't called her all day? She picked up her purse and car keys and left her room.

* * *

Stacey entered the gate smiling. She met her sister at the door entrance.

"What happened?" Lois asked her, smiling back.

"A colleague gave me a ride on a motor bike. It was wonderful,"

Lois stared back at her in bewilderment, "A colleague gave you a ride on okada and you're grinning and saying it was wondeful?"

"No o'," Stacey shouted, laughing at the picture her sister had. " Motor bike. Zoom zoom. Uncle Ralph's kind now."

Lois joined in the laughter. "Oh really? I heard the sound as I was coming out but couldn't have guessed you were on it. Enjoyment sis."

"Yeah. You're dressed. Where are you going?" Stacey asked.

"It's thursday now. Church," her sister replied.

Stacey hissed. "We stayed back to do some work, and now I'm so tired, I can't make it."

"It's okay. Let me hurry before I go late," Lois said quickly dashing out of the gate.

"Bye," Stacey called after her and then went into the house.

* * *

Later in the evening, Linda appeared in Jason's house unannounced. She went straight to the BQ and barged into his room, expecting to find him with the girl;
Jason wasn't there. She cursed and left the room.

Meanwhile, Jason left the house few minutes earlier to hers, to apologize for the previous day. He met her apartment locked. He decided to give her a call.

Linda was still within his compound when she saw her phone ringing. She picked the call.

"Linn hi,"

"Jason, where are you?"

"At your doorstep, babe. And you?"

She hesitated. If he really was at her place, then she needed to confirm. She quickly got into her car and replied, "I'm on the road coming home."

"Ok. I'll wait here." Jason dropped the call and walked back to his car, thinking. He met Linn at a party a few months ago and they hit it off together. She was beautiful, intelligent... but that was about it. He didn't feel that deep satisfaction of happiness he craved for in the relationship. And now, he wasn't even as attracted to her as he thought he was.

He opened the car door and sat inside. Was he here to apologize, or to call the relationship off? He hadn't decided. There were more serious things bugging his mind and he needed a break.

"Will you like to spend the rest of your life with Linda?" the question just popped up from somewhere in his head and conjured a sudden dreadful feeling of repulsion at the thought of spending the rest of his life stuck with Linda.

"No way," he said to himself, shaking his head.

Then the voice came again, "You are right, you can't. So do the right thing for both of you. Put sin away."

Jason, for the first time, didn't feel like fighting the voice off. His encounter the previous night in his sleep came flooding back. This name of Jesus delivered him from what he could only describe as a hell visitation.

His mum invited him to her church some weeks ago, where he heard the gospel preached in a different kind of way that caught his attention. Unlike all the stuff he'd heard and disagreed with, this guest preacher from California spoke some light and he found himself muttering a prayer of repentance after the preacher made an altar call, even though he didn't join others out to the altar. He felt stupid the moment he left the church hall that day. Everything seemed the same to him and he reminded himself he wasn't going to join the madness and drama he saw church folks do. He didn't visit church again.

But something did happen... He thought back to the day his friend, Jack, made a ten thousand dollar bet. Jack asked him to listen through some messages by one Minister, which he had downloaded into his ipod, and if he still found no interest in God, he would pay him the bet, denounce Christianity, and eat a can of lizard eyes. Crazy man, Jason thought.

He accepted the bet anyways and spent some time listening to the messages. He even got a bible and a few other materials and did a study. The things he discovered were so off the charts. They were like nothing he had imagined, given the kind of religious practice he'd seen people around him engage in. He listened to all the messages in the ipod twice and he listened to some more teachings.

By the time he was done, indeed he had a change of mind about God, but he found himself resisting any change these new insights brought to his life. Jack, contacted him a week afterwards to enquire and he lied that he didn't find the time to listen to the messages. And then he turned down the bet.

And ever since, he's been hearing the voice, having nightmares, second guessing his decisions, and feeling uncomfortable with a lot around him, including Linda.

"Hey,"

He was startled out of his thoughts by her voice.

"Sleeping?"she asked, standing with her arm resting on his car door and jingling her keys.

"Just resting, waiting for you."

She turned around and walked towards her apartment. Jason came out of his car and followed her.

"Linn, about yesterday, I think I-"

"Shut up Jason. You don't have to," she said without looking back. She knew a better way to get the truth out of him without having to deal with his excuses and possible lies.

Horrors At Midnight Part 2

Stacey finished praying and went to have a meal.
"Are you coming for bible study today?" she asked her sister, Lois. They were seated on the dining table together.

"Yes. That was the same thing I came to ask you earlier but you were praying," Lois answered.

"Well that's good. We can start leaving now," Stacey gathered the plates together. "I'm ready already, so I'll go and wash these while you get ready and join me."

"Ok. Thanks darling sis" Lois hurried into the room.

Few minutes later they left the house and went to church. They had an awesome time in the presence of the Lord. Stacey in particular loved the way the choir sang, the way Pastor Jide ministered, explaining the Genesis chapter one. By 8pm, the bible study was over and they were on their way home. They got to the junction by public transport and walked to the house. As they passed the fine mansion, Stacey remembered Jason and the day's episode. She wondered what she'll have to do the following morning when they meet.

 *********** ************* ***********

It was about 9pm. Jason had invited his girlfriend over to spend the night with him and they were making out on the bed.

"Jay... I've missed you so baaad," his kisses muffled her words. They were underneath the sheets.

"Linn... I want," he kissed her again, "you now." And he threw off the sheets to reveal the two of them, half-naked.

"Son, listen to me. You know better. You know the truth. Don't give the flesh a chance. I have given you the grace. You have overcome," the same voice came again, this time with urgency as he pulled Linn up.

Suddenly, as if a switch went off inside him, Jason stood up from the bed and went into the bathroom. He was there for over a minute.

"Jay... I'm waiting," Linn called out. "You've got any surprises? Please baby... don't keep we waiting too long."

Jason ran his fingers through his hair in confusion. That voice again. He didn't want to yield to the voice, but here he was, flat and out. Something was up and it was strange. How would he explain to Linn that his... He sighed and rinsed his face. There was a towel hanging on a pin on the wall, he tied it and came out of the bathroom.

"Jay. What is it? Why are you in a towel?" Linn asked, surprised.

"Baby, I'm... I'm sorry. I suddenly went cold, and lost the drive," he was wearing his shorts and t-shirts while talking to her.

"What? What are you saying? Jason what is wrong with you? Are you, are you getting d-ressed?" Linn just sat there on the bed totally lost.

Jason wore his t-shirt and without saying a word, he left the room.

************ *********** ************

He knew Linn would probably come into the main house to look for him and he had no explanations to give her. He just asked the gateman to open the gate and went to the garage. He put on his helmet, pulled his power bike quietly out of the gate, climbed on it and zoomed off.

"What do you want from me? What!" Jason shouted in rage. He knew deep inside. He knew when and where all these started: the voices, the nightmares, the awareness, he knew and as much as he wanted to pretend it was all a figment of his imagination, he couldn't - the evidence was too much. He drove through the major roads and entered the highway. At about 10:30pm, the road was very less busy and perfect.

"I shouldn't have asked. I shouldn't have known. I shouldn't have delved into your business. Now would you leave mine?!" Jason was driving at such top speed that he didn't see a police vehicle flag him down. The next thing he knew, he saw two police hilux vans driving at top speed following his trail. Tonight wasn't a night to be harrased by the police he thought. He entered Rumuola Road from Aba Road, and he spotted them following him. He drove and entered GRA through SBS junction. And somewhere along the line, they lost him.

For a moment he was glad he was in Nigeria where the Police networking system was light years behind. He got to his house, parked the bike, and went into the main house. The short thrill and adventure he just experienced had temporarily stifled his worries.

 *****************************************

“Jason. Where have you been? And why did you leave without a word to Linn?” his mother was awake, waiting in the sitting room.

“I had to take care of stuff mum. It was urgent. Where is she now?”

“She looked upset. She has probably left. I’m going to bed now. Good night Son,” she stood up and left the room.

Jason kissed his mother good night and also left to the Boys quarters praying inside that he doesn’t find Linn in the room when he gets there. Sure enough, when he came in, she had left. He heaved a sigh of relief and went to sleep.

 * * *

There was a strange cry like that of a bat, or was it some night animal, he couldn’t tell. But the sound woke him up, or so he thought. He was awake but he couldn’t open his eyes. He wanted to stand up, but he couldn’t move his hands or any part of his body. It was as if there was a force holding him down, pressing him down with its weight. He tried to scream, but words wouldn’t come out of his mouth because his lips were sealed. Then he remembered that name, the only name he hoped would save him from whatever this was. He screamed the name of Jesus, but alas, it seemed like it was his spirit alone screaming because his lips was shut and couldn’t move. After a few seconds, miraculously, whatever it was lifted itself off him and he regained the use of his body. He woke up with a start and looked around. Then he checked the time – it was 2:30am. His heart was beating so fast. He didn’t know what to do next. This would be the second time he was having such an experience. The first time it happened, he was in the city of London.

*********** ********** ***********
For… we are not of the night nor of darkness… He... came down: and darkness was under his feet.
*********** ********** ***********

The following morning, Stacey left the house as early as 6:10 am to walk to the junction where the bus would pick her. It was a five-minute walk and the road was really quiet, but she didn’t mind. She wanted to enjoy the sweet breeze of the morning. So she strolled. The bus arrived at exactly 6:30 am but Jason hadn’t come out. As she entered the bus, the driver greeted and asked,

“What about Oyinbo?”

“Oyinbo? I don’t know,” She replied and took a seat next to one of the senior staff seeing that Chika already had company.

“Abeg anybody get him number to call am out?” someone else asked.

“Driver, move this vehicle my friend,” the man seating next to Stacey commanded. “Will you keep us waiting and make everyone get late because of one person?”

The driver put on the ignition and the bus left.

* * *

Meanwhile, Jason knew he wouldn’t meet the bus because he woke up late. He had tried to sleep after the episode he had in the night, but couldn’t until about 5 in the morning. He came out at about 6:40am and decided to ride to work on his bike. The gateman opened the gate for him and he sped away. Along the way he zoomed past the bus.

“See bad rider!” Tega, the guy sitting with Chika exclaimed as the biker passed.

“You no go do buy your own?” someone else in the bus asked aloud.

Stacey was reading a novel when the bike zoomed past and distracted her. She looked up to see the bike. Once upon a time when she was a little girl, she closed her eyes remembering, she used to nurture this fantasy of riding on a power bike like this one because her Mum’s brother, Uncle Ralph, used to own one. Unfortunately her desire for riding died with her Uncle Ralph after he got involved in a ghastly motor accident, although not as a result of riding a bike. Some things seem so distantly impossible, she thought.

“Stacey,”

“Ehh,” she opened her eyes. The bus was in the company premises already.

“You are sleeping on site?” the older man sitting next to her asked her. “I hope you don’t become a hazard at the site today.”

She smiled and stood up excusing him to pass. She was the last to come down from the bus and sign in. After signing in, she joined the rest for the routine Toolbox meeting.

“Hi,” the person standing next to her greeted while the Safety Marshal was addressed the gathering of over fifty workers. She turned to see that it was Jason, dressed on coverall and a face cap.

Surprised, she greeted, “Good morning. When did you get here?”

“I flew down. I mean I rode down after missing the bus,” he replied with a wink.

She didn’t quite understand what he meant but she also didn’t want to start asking questions because the Toolbox meeting was on. As the meeting went on, she was looking around when she caught sight of the power bike. Then, she understood.

 * * *

“The Project Manager will be visiting this site to see how far the installations have gone. Now is not the time to give me that trash, Jide,” the Site Manager was telling the Mechanical Department Superintendent in his office while Stacey was standing by at a corner.

She had followed the SM to the Mechanical Department office on their way back to the construction site. She didn’t know whether to excuse herself and return to the site or stand there and have to listen to their conversation.

“We’re working on it. The turbine was in position this morning,” the superintendent stood up as he was talking.

“And then what happened? It moved itself? Don’t present yourself as incompetent, Jide. That system had better be aligned before you leave this site today.” The SM beckoned on her and they left the office together.

Stacey was also with the Mechanical Department but on another team handling flushing of the gas pipelines. If she heard the SM’s final statement correctly then it meant her team would also be affected by this delay. She sighed. Last minute rush was never her style because it could spoil things, and that was their current challenge.

Horrors At Midnight Part 1

********** ********** **********
In the beginning... darkness was upon the face of the deep... and the darkness He called Night.
********** ************ **********

Jason woke up from what felt like endless hours of sleep. He turned to check the time on the digital wall clock beside his bed: it was 5:59am. At that instant the clock alarm went off as it turned 6:00am and he bolted out of the bed and into the bathroom. While brushing his teeth over the sink and humming a song, he noticed a red spot just above his left eye brow. He touched the area and rubbed it. It didn't hurt neither did it come off. He rinsed his mouth and washed his face to remove the mark but it didn't go off. He decided to leave it and continue with preparing for the morning.

Twenty minutes later he was out of the house - his family house, dressed in a black t-shirt, loose sky blue jeans trousers, a pair of brown leather safety boots, and a face cap that did well in hiding the very obvious spot on his fair skin. The junction where he had to wait for the company bus that picks him up was only a couple of blocks away. So he eased his pace as there was still time and strolled, enjoying the fresh, dust-free cool air. The road was quiet with only a handful of people on the street, and a few cars driving by occasionally. He adjusted his laptop bag to the right shoulder just in time as a lady brushed past him in a hurry, heading towards the same junction. She was also dressed in boots, but with a tight fitting pair of black jeans trousers and a red top. The front zip of her laptop bag was open and the contents of the bag almost falling out, unknown to her.

"Hey," he called out to get her attention to it, but she didn't slow down. Then a piece of paper fell out of the bag and he picked it on his way to meet up with her.

"Honk! Honk!" The company bus pulled over at the junction and she hopped into the bus. He also did.

"Oyibo. Good morning," the driver greeted him as he stepped in.

"Good morning man," he replied patting the elderly man's hand as he passed. He found an empty seat in the almost full bus and sat down. The lady, he observed, had taken a seat by another lady and was chatting away. He reconsidered his intention and chose to wait until later to give her the paper, so he put it in his bag, brought out his head phone and relaxed in his chair to listen to some good country music.

********** *********** **********

"Stacey, you live on the same street with Jason? Wooow," Chika whispered teasingly. She turned to steal a glance at him and smiled at her friend.

"What is wrong with you? Please stop putting silly ideas in my head. This," Stacey replied rolling her pointed fingers, "is an attempt to ruin any formal relationship we would have had as collics. Don't you ever think outside the dating box?"
"Oh, sorry Mother Mary. I forgot your oath of eternal celebacy," Chika answered in a sarcastic tone and sneered at her friend. "Don't miss your chance."

Stacey just shook her head and brought out her bible to read for the rest of the journey to the office.

********************************

When the bus arrived the gate to the company site, Jason checked his wristwatch - it was five minutes to seven am. He pulled the headphone down to his neck and stood up, making his way to door, as the bus entered the compound and parked at a corner. Everyone signed in for work at the gate and went straight for Toolbox meeting because it was already 7am.

The Site Manager came out to give a quick talk on safety on the site. "Here in Blue Energy Ltd, we practice 100% safety so each and everyone of you must be safety concious everytime and everywhere. You must be dressed appropriately around the work area. You must handle your working tools with care..." he continued, addressing everyone.

The meeting took another ten minutes, and after that everyone was dismissed to their various departments. The Supritendent for the Mechanical Department asked all members of that department to assemble at the site by 7:20am for a brief meeting before work commences.

Jason left for the Mechanical Department office to change up and met Stacey along the way.

"Hi," he greeted her, feeling his pocket for the paper. It wasn't there. So he checked the bag.
"Here. You dropped it on your way to the bus." He gave her the paper and walked forward without even waiting for an appreciation.

Stacey looked at the paper. It was the same one on which she'd scribbled some Bible references and other official notes. She shouted a thank you after him and moved on.

************ ************ ************

During lunch break, Chika came over with her tray to seat by Stacey at the cafeteria.

"Sharp sharp girl. After all your nyanga I still saw you this morning o. What did he give you?" she winked at Stacey and adjusted her chair closer.

"Chika," Stacey looked at her and sighed, "let me have a break. Please."

"Have your break. Are we not on break? Is it not a simple question I asked? Chill jor," Chika said and started eating.

"I'm not interested in this dating thing, especially with a colleague and I'm sure the guy is not. He just joined us yesterday."

"I hear. Oyibo not interested. Lemme not just catch you because I'll be watching you henceforth," Chika pointed at her. "Mother of God."

"Is it because I advised you to mind how you flirt around with these men on the site, you're making all these funny statements?" Stacey asked point blank.

"It's because I want to prove to you that I'm human and so are you! So you stop judging me," Chika answered her and left the table to another one.

*********** ************ ***********

Jason and Stacey came down from the bus across the same spot where they entered in the morning. Stacey had made up her mind she wasn't going to get any friendly with him to avoid eventualities so she walked slowly, allowing space in between them as he went forward. Jason realized it was just the two of them that came down from the bus and it was a bit awkward that he'll just walk away without interacting with her, for colleagues’ sake. He turned around, clutching both straps of his bag and waited for her as she came forward walking ever so slowly.

***************************************

"Hi," Jason said to her when she had come three feet away from him, "Is there a problem?"

She looked up at him with a frown.

"Sorry, I mean, just this morning you sped past me. So I was wondering..." he joined her. "I'm Jason."

"Jason, thanks for this morning. I'm Stacey," she replied with a smile. But inside, she was wondering what on earth made him stop.

"That's a nice name. You live around?"

"Yes. Down the road,"

"So... We'll see again tomorrow then," he said as he halted just in front of a beautiful brown gate, "I live here."

Stacey looked at the house in admiration - it was magnificient. Then she turned to him, "Lovely. See you tomorrow."

Jason knocked as she walked away and a security guard looked through a peephole before opening the gate to let him in. He entered the compound and went straight into the main house.
"Sup mum?"

"Jason. You're welcome Son. How was work today? Did you eat something before leaving," his mother continued, walking over to meet him and embrace him, "Anything the matter? You don't like it there?"

"I'm fine. Thank you, mum. Work was fantastic today. Anything to eat?" he dropped his bag on the couch and went for the wine bar.

"I'll ask Ledum to bring you something to eat, dear," and she went inside calling the Kitchen servant as she did.

Jason poured himself a half glass of wine and took a sip. It tasted good. He took the bottle and glass of wine into the sitting room and sat before the TV. The last thing he wanted to watch was some hypocrites staging drama before a blind stupid congregation, so he reached for the remote and changed the channel to a sports station.

"Now that's better," he said to himself and relaxed to watch soccer.

"Yeah it is," he heard a voice say in his head. He adjusted and turned around. He was alone.

"You can't shut me out Jason, you can't shut out the truth that you know."

"I can. And I will," Jason replied speaking out. "And I'll make sure I keep my sanity." He stood up and went back to the counter to pour himself a glass of red wine. He emptied the glass in a minute and poured another one.

"Your food is ready sir," Ledum the maid came in and told him, bowing her knees in greeting.

"Thank you."

********** ********* **********

Stacey got back home and went straight into her room to pray after greeting everyone. She was in her room for about ten minutes when her sister, Lois, came in to greet her but saw her praying seriously.

"Father I thank you for stalling every attempt of the enemy to engage me in spiritual battle. I thank you also for victory over every spirit of malice. I rebuke the devil concerning my colleagues..."

Stacey was kneeling down, backing the door. Her sister waited a bit, then left the room closing the door behind her.

Double Issues Part 7 of 7

It was exactly three days to Boma's birthday, when Mr. Bade called. He informed Tonye that Mr. Ray and his family were in town and needed to meet Boma. He had been keeping Tonye informed about the latest discoveries but pleaded with him to not tell Boma yet.

Greg worked with Channels TV as a reporter. He needed a huge break that will spike his career and behold, he'd just come up with the good deal.
"Look man, Nigerians have had a good bout of bad news reported from all angles. Take a look at this now, that Blue spring Saga was all over the media when it happened, and why shouldn't people get to hear the good part?" he asked Tonye.
They were seating in the car, waiting for Boma, who was just rounding up at the salon.
"Greg, I get your point. But remember it's someone's personal life. And her family may not like all the publicity."
"Oh Tonye, Ki lo sele nah, fun mi laye ejo, ah."
"I'll talk to Boma and Mr. Ray about it."
 "Please do."
 "Here she comes. Case closed."

Boma joined them. She looked breathtaking. Just a little polishing and Tonye could see the semblance with that girl he met at the airport two months ago. How blessed he was to be entwined in this whole story and in the life of this beauty.
"Darn! You look so beautiful baby," he exclaimed coming out of the car to get a better view of her.
"Boma da bomb! This is sizzling hot. T-boy don't touch it!" Greg stepped out of the car to make room for her.

"I've got good news for you babe." Tonye told her.
"Spill it, Tee." she said, full of smiles.
"It's so important, I can't just share it here. Please, my lady, where would you rather be, hearing this piece of news?" Tonye bowed as he asked.
"Anywhere will do! Ok... How aboooout The Palms?" she asked.
"The Palms it is, my lady." he bowed again and guided her to the passenger seat next to him.

********** *********** ***********

The Deolas were all excited about getting to meet Boma. Mr. Bade had updated them on all that Tonye had done for her and how he was expecting word from him, to know when they can see her.
In the meantime, as they drove through town, coming from the Metro Car park, Nicole asked, "Can we go somewhere fun and exciting, Uncle Bade?"
"And where would you like me to take you to, my dear?" he asked her.
"I'll like to visit The Palms. I loved that place when I saw it on TV."
"In that case, I'll drop off your Mom and Dad at home then we'll go there with my daughter, Wumni."
"And who says we don't want to have fun too?" Mr. Ray asked winking at his wife.
"Let's go there then." Bade said and they headed to The Palms Mall.

************ ************ ***********

Tonye and Boma walked hand-in-hand with Greg tagging along as they entered into The Palms cinema hall. The next movie, Megamind, would be up in fifteen minutes so they bought tickets and waited.

Mr. Bade drove into the park and soon all four of them were also headed into the Cinema section.
"We'll get you and your mom tickets." Mr. Ray said. "I and Uncle Bade will just have some drinks and talk.

Once inside the hall, Mr. Ray gave Nicole some money to get the tickets herself while he spoke with her mom.
She went to the ticket stand to get tickets for the Movie, Megamind, which would be up in ten minutes.

"Sorry, didn't you just buy a ticket already?" the guy selling asked, looking at her like Are-you-confused.
"I'm sorry, I just got here. Can I have my tickets." she replied politely and rolled her eyes.
"But you did. You..." he was saying when Boma and crew walked past behind her and he saw them. "Is she your twin?"
"Who?" and she turned around to look at the direction of his eyes. Then she saw Boma.

*******************************************

Boma just about that time spotted Mr. Ray who was just feets away talking to his wife. She froze.
Then Mr. Bade appeared from nowhere and seeing her, called out her name out of excitement to get her attention.

Tess and Mr. Ray turned to see and there, right in front of them, stood the splitting image of their daughter. Boma was so overwhelmed with seeing Mr. Ray again, he also didn't wait for her to faint, and he just ran and carried her up, swinging her around.
"Tess! That's our daughter!" he screamed pointing at Boma as he dropped her down.
"Boma... Babyyy?" Tess said trembling as she came closer and held the puzzled Boma. "Oh my Babyyy".
Tess hugged her crying, and almost everyone, even those that had movies to watch stood watching.

Only Tonye and Greg knew the reason why Boma appeared confused, not flowing in the excitement. Tonye hadn't gotten to chance to tell her anything yet. Today wasn't supposed to happen by his calculation. And where was Nicole?

Nicole stood from a distance, by the ticket stand watching the scene. All her life she never imagined dreams could come through like this one. So there was her twin sister, ha, she laughed quaking with tears.

"Where's Nicole?!" Mr. Ray suddenly asked. "Nicole!"
And then it clicked in Boma's head what was happening and she looked around and saw Nicole, and after the few seconds it took to absorb the sight of who she was seeing, there was no need for explanations.

Crying, she ran towards her and gave her hug.
"Her twin Sister!" people whispered and exclaimed around them.

"Oh my God. I can't believe this is really happening." Nicole was saying as she took a good look at Boma. "You're my sister! Oh... God."
Tess came over to hug them. And then Ray joined.
Tonye, Greg, Mr. Bade and the rest of the onlookers just kept asking and gasping the ohhs and ahhs.

************* *************** *************

Word soon spread around the Palms that a family was just meeting their daughter, the second half of a twin, for the first time and a huge crowd started to gather.
Greg wasn't going to miss his chance, he had already ran to the car to get his camcorder and was taking a video. Then he went over to Mr. Ray.
"Hello sir, I'm a friend of Boma and a reporter for channels TV. Please can I get an interview?"
Mr. Ray obliged him. Then he found Tonye to help him hold the camera.

"Hello viewers, we're right here at the Palms Cinema where something spectacular just happened. This family was amongst those affected by the Blue spring Medical Centre, which was closed down in 2000. Mr. Deola and his wife here, had a set of twins at the Blue spring Medical Centre, and hear directly from the family, what happened." Greg said and turned to Mr. Ray.

"I was made to believe we lost one of my twins at the hospital. I only found out recently, sixteen years after, that my daughter wasn't dead as they claimed, but alive. Thanks to the good Samaritan who rescued her from those evil doctors." Mr. Ray said, wiping his eyes.

Greg went to where Tess and the girls stood and continued.
"Meet Tess, the mother of the twins." he spoke into the camera. Then he turned to her and sort her participation. "Please ma, tell us how you feel now?"
Tess was crying, "I've met my daughter today. Can you believe I never knew she was alive all these years? Today, God has shown that he is not asleep. I'm so overwhelmed. My twins are alive and whole."

Then he went over to Boma and Nicole.
"Girls. Today's your happy day." Greg said to them.
"I'm so amazed. I came into Nigeria two days ago to meet my twin sister Boma and here she is. Isn't God amazing?" Nicole said, face stained with tears and makeup.
"The story of my life couldn't get any better and twisted. I was brought up by my late uncle, my father's twin brother, who rescued me from that hospital, and I always thought he was my father. Today, I've met my biological parents and my twin sister. I'm just blessed."
 Boma said.
"Yes. You've seen it, you've heard it. This family has reunited today thanks to one man, one hero, Mr. Richmond Kio of blessed memory, who dared to do right in Blue spring Medical Centre. And also to friends of the family members. I am Greg Adebayo, reporting for Channels TV." Greg concluded and gave Tonye a hi-five.

THE END

Double Issues Part 6 of 7

Bade went to the bar immediately it was lunch time. He ordered for a drink and a plate of pepper soup. And while the girl attending to him went to get his order, he looked around, observing the faces of the workers.

Jonah walked into the bar at that same time and sat down. He had just returned from one of the errands Madame Kali sent him. Then Madame Kali asked one of the girls to collect some money from him. As she came chewing gum and swinging her hips, she hissed at Jonah and looked towards Bade.

Jonah smiled and tried to put his hand around her waist but she barked at him.
"Common commot! You think sey I dey play with you. Abi I look like Boma for your eye?"
"Taaa. You fit look like her? She better pass you ten times. No dream am." he answered her mockingly and threw the money on the table for her.

Bade watched them both and after he was served, he asked the girl that attended to him to give Jonah a bottle of drink too. The girl did as he said and brought the bottle to Jonah.
"Na that oga there buy you the drink." she informed him and walked back to continue her work.
Jonah turned to Bade's direction and took a seat next to him thanking him.
"No problem. You work here?" Bade asked.
"Yes sir. Here be my station." Jonah replied.
"So you know Boma very well I guess."
"Boma na my girl na. I know her, but she no dey here again."
"Where she dey work now? Where I fit find her?" Bade probed further.
"Oga I no know o'. Any problem?" Jonah had to ask seeing the man's seriousness.
"Please if you can help me with her whereabouts, I'll appreciate you. She met me some days ago at Metro Car Park - I'm the owner. I offered to assist her, but I've not seen her pass by since that day." Bade explained to Jonah.
"Ah Oga, she pack commot on Saturday morning. But I fit take you go one of her friend place for Raymond street. She fit dey there." Jonah answered looking back.
So they agreed to meet again in the evening at the car park.

 *********** ************* ***********

Nicole sensed something was wrong with her Dad, they way he looked this past weekend was pretty unusual. She decided to ask.
 "Dad?"
 "Yes, Sweetie."
"You've been looking sad all weekend. Anything wrong?"
"Oh, no, nothing to much that the good Lord or a glass of wine can't handle." he replied smiling.
Nicole laughed. The humour to cover up her question, nonetheless, didn't work.
"So, Dad, what's wrong?" she asked again taking him off guard.
"Nicky, I'm fine. Quit worrying about me. I'll just have a drink or pray or do both. But I'm ok, ask your mama." he responded and left the kitchen to the living room, where he sat before the TV and increased the volume with the remote.

Tess had told him how probably devastated Nicole would be if she learned about the death of her 'Uncle'. He knew he couldn't hide it from her for long, but at least he could wait until he was in touch with his niece so there'll be some good news to overshadow the bad.

Nicole sighed. Her Dad was hiding something from her, but she would get it out from him sooner or later. Right now, she needed to quench her boredom with some good peer company.

********** *********** ***********

Bade drove to Raymond street, to the very house where Jonah showed him, in the estate. He hoped the girl was really staying there.
Just as he was about to knock the door, a car drove in - it was Tonye who had returned.

Tonye was surprised to see the man in front of his house. And the gateman: what did he tell him to have allowed him into the house when he wasn't around?
Tonye parked his car in front of his house and came down. Then he noticed Jonah standing beside the car.

"Oga welcome. I carry dis man come. Him sey e won see Boma, very important. Naim I carry am come here. No vex." Jonah said, coming over to greet Tonye.
"Hello sir. Good evening." Tonye greeted Bade.
"Good evening. Please I'm here to see Boma." Bade said giving Tonye a hand shake.
"Who are you sir? So I can find out if she wants to see you."
"I am Bade, Bade Martins. We met at my car park some days ago. She may not recollect the name, but tell her the man she saw at the park, that looked like her father..." he was saying when Tonye quickly ushered him in.
"Come in, sir. I'm sure she'd want to see you." Tonye said as he closed the door behind them.
Boma had just told him about the incident over the phone earlier in the afternoon and he was of the opinion that they go back there to enquire about him.

Inside the house, Boma was surprised to see Jonah and she didn't even recognize the man. She assumed he came with Tonye.
"Welcome sir. Welcome. Jonah, what brought you here?" she greeted and then asked Jonah calmly.

"Boma, I'm Bade. We met at the Metro car park few days ago, where you fainted after seeing my friend." Bade spoke up first. "Jonah brought me here because I've been looking for you."

Boma jumped up, scared. "What do you want?" she asked, her face a mixture of fear and surprise.
Tonye came to her side comforting her, and made her seat down again.
"Boma, the man you saw was not a ghost, he was your father's brother." Bade continued.
"My father's brother?" she asked looking at him as if he was saying something stupid. "what? do you even know about my father?"
"I know he's late. I know he grew up in St Peters Orphanage. I also know he had a twin brother called Raymond."
Both Boma and Tonye looked at each other amazed at what Bade knew. Jonah was obviously lost.
"How did you get all these information?" Tonye asked Bade.
"Raymond is my friend and business partner. He was in Nigeria a few days ago and they met at my car park." Bade sat up as he continued. "After their encounter, my friend went in search of his brother's whereabouts and that's how come he discovered and told me all I now know."

"But my father never told me he had a twin brother." Boma said enquiringly.
"Or maybe he did and we missed it in all that paper. We should go through the box again." Tonye said, and went inside to bring out the box.
 "What box?" Bade asked her.
She wasn't paying attention to him so she didn't reply. Tonye returned with the box and he gave Boma the letter.

She read through it again. No mention of a relative, much less a twin.
"Mr. Bade, my father grew up in the orphanage and he didn't tell me about any relative of his. But, it's possible. I remember the striking resemblance when I saw that man at your car park." Boma said, then sighed, "But all that doesn't really matter now because this letter here, written by my father, tells me I'm not his biological child."
"What?" Bade looked puzzled. "What do you mean?"

Tonye spoke this time, not wanting Boma to get into tears again. "We just discovered that she's not his daughter. He rescued her from Blue spring Medical Centre where the Doctors had stolen her from the woman who gave birth to her."

"Oh my God! Blue spring Medical Centre? My goodness!" Bade exclaimed, shocked at the news.
"His letter of appointment dated August 1995 is even here." Tonye added pointing at the white envelope.
 "This is mind blowing."
"Well, that's the result of wickedness perpetuated by fellow human beings on each other." Tonye said.
"My God!" Bade looked at Boma feeling sad for her. "Well, I'll get back to you. But please, for the sake of the kindness my friend's brother showed to you my dear. Can I get your contact so he can reach you? He sees you as his niece."

Boma hesitated but Tonye gave Bade his contact and thanked him very much for coming, before escorting Jonah and Bade out of the house.
Boma was just stunned. Everyday seemed to have a surprise of its own. Yesterday, the man she knew as her father turned out not to be her biological father. Today, he has a twin brother that she had mistaken for a ghost. What will tomorrow bring? She wondered.

***************************************

It took two days before Bade could get in touch with Mr. Ray on the phone. He called him in the evening, when it was a bit late in the night at Alabama.
 "Hello Ray."
 "Hello Bade. How are you?"
"I'm fine my brother. And you? Sorry I should have called earlier."
"It's okay. I'm sure you have good news for me, that's why."
"Yes Ray, I found the girl." Bade said.
"You did? Ah, my niece has been found." Mr. Ray said elated. He looked over at his wife, considering whether to wake her up to let her know or wait.
"Ray, there's a problem." Bade continued.
"Problem? What problem?" Mr. Ray said casually still happy at the initial news.
"She is not Richmond's biological daughter."
 "Eh? You said what?"
"I said she's not his daughter. The story is long. But the summary is that, he rescued her in 1995 when he was working with Blue spring Medical Centre as a cleaner. Seems she was stolen from birth by the corrupt Doctors, but was fortunate to have been rescued before any harm befell her." Bade was talking.

"Wait wait wait, Bade. Please take it again." Mr. Ray requested. The information was just too much for him to break down.
Bade repeated what he had said again, adding that Boma was now in search of her real family.

Mr. Ray thanked Bade for the help and ended the call. The one thing he'd feared the most, ever since he heard of the Blue spring Medical Centre Saga, was about to befall him.

When the news first came to him about how that medical Centre had been taken to court for gross malpractice, his first thought was: I hope they didn't use my daughter's body for ritual. But he dismissed the idea and convinced Tess to do same. Later on, when he saw that girl at the park, for a moment, his mind went back to Blue spring and he wondered if perhaps they deceived him and his wife and probably sold his daughter to another couple. Now, he'd just discovered his brother worked there the same year Tess was admitted to the hospital at her delivery, and his brother rescued a baby girl that looks identical to his Nicole.

This was too much to take in. He quickly left the room and went downstairs to the kitchen to get a drink from the fridge. He needed to calm down.

About an hour later, Tess woke up and when she didn't find her husband on the bed, she wore her dressing robe and came down to the kitchen.
"Ray, what are you doing up, drinking by midnight?" she asked standing at the door.
"Tess." he looked at her weighing his words before saying it. "I have to make a trip back to Nigeria, tomorrow."
"What are you talking about, Ray?" she asked taking a seat right next to him.
Mr. Ray was trying to put his emotions in check because he wanted to fling the table away in anger. He just held it so tight, and banged on it in frustration.
"Ray! What's wrong with you? Nicole is gonna wake up, it's midnight." Tess said, standing up to go over to her husband.
He just didn't know what to do or say. How could this have happened to him, to them? How can he even put the news to his wife, his daughter? All the years of pain Tess had gone through crying about her lost daughter, all the years their daughter has had to live cheated of the good things of life, all the years Nicole has had to live as an only child when she so wanted siblings, siblings they could not have for her due to the complications Tess had having the twins.

"Ray, please you're getting me scared already. What is going on, honey?" she asked. This time she had come to the sink where he was standing and she placed her palm on his clenched fists.
"Mom. Dad. What's happening here?" Nicole had come into the kitchen, awakened by the noise.

*********** ************* ***********

Tonye took Boma out to shop for clothing and toiletries. They also hung out with Greg, who had a lot to catch up with. All the while, Boma waited to hear from Mr. Bade but Tonye said he hadn't called. Meanwhile he got her a phone and talked her into getting a Jamb form so she could write the following years' exam.

************ ************ ************

Mr. Ray turned around when he heard Nicole's voice. He didn't know where to start now. He looked at his wife, then at his daughter. There was no need hiding it from them any longer. It was beyond him alone to keep to himself.
"Tess. Nicole. Please have a seat."
"No Ray, I can't have a seat. You need to say what's on your mind while we're standing." Tess said and walked over to her daughter to hold her for comfort.
Mr. Ray heaved a heavy sigh. "Tess. They lied to us. The Doctors."
"What doctors?" Tess asked him looking puzzled.
"The doctors at Blue spring Medical Centre."
"lied 'bout what, Dad ?" Nicole asked
"About our daughter, Tess, they deceived us after all."
"Raymond, what are you saying?" Tess said walking up to him, eyes searching his.
"Tess. Our daughter is alive!" he said to let her see the brighter side of things.
"Dad, that's a joke right?" Nicole said, still standing by the door.
"Bade called me up and told me that he's seen her and he confirmed it. Tess, I confirmed it too. It's the same girl I met."
"What?! What same girl?" Nicole was asking when her mother slumped.
 "Mom!" "Tess!"
Mr. Ray grabbed his wife before she hit the floor. Nicole hurried to get a bowl of water, while he undressed his wife so she could breathe. Few minutes later she fluttered her eyelids and opened her eyes.
"Ray, I need to see my baby." she cried.
